The ten seconds that decide your audit

The ten seconds that decide your audit

August 20, 2026

There's a moment inside every RTO that never makes it into the compliance calendar.

It's the end of a team meeting. Everyone's packing up. And a trainer pauses long enough to say the quiet thing: "That assessment tool isn't working."

Thirty years across five RTOs, and I've watched that moment play out more times than I can count. What happens in the next ten seconds matters more than everything in your evidence folder - because it decides whether your people keep telling you the truth.
Meet it with defensiveness - the tool passed validation, there's no time, why now - and the trainer files it away and never raises it again. Your early-warning system switches itself off, quietly and permanently. Nobody hears it happen. The evidence folder stays thick. It just stops being true.

Meet it with four words - "tell me what you're seeing" - then write it down and date it, and you've just done validation. The real kind. Happening in real time, in the training room, not assembled in a flurry the month before an audit.

This is also why I keep saying ASQA's outcome focus is good news for RTOs that run honestly. A folder that's thick but shallow isn't the asset it used to be. What holds up under an outcomes lens is evidence of what genuinely happens with your learners - captured as it happens, by people who feel safe enough to name what isn't working.

Compliance built on performance needs a script. Compliance built on truth just needs space for people to tell it.
When did someone on your team last tell you something wasn't working - and what did you do in the ten seconds after?

Circles, not ladders.
Always. 🧡
